Peel the back off the tape and slide it under all four strings. Make sure to measure carefully from the inside of the nut, on the side of the fingerboard, not the side that goes into the peg box.

For a full-sized violin, make your first mark at 1 3/8 inches or 35 millimeters from the edge of the nut. Continue measuring forward to:

* 2 5/8 inches or 66 millimeters for the 2nd spot

* 3 1/8 inches or 80 millimeters for the 3rd spot

* 4 1/8 inches or 106 millimeters for the final mark

Adjust these measurements according to your instrument's size (see below).

Tips and Variations

While it's recommended to use special violin fingerboard tapes, you can also use stickers or printer labels. Even a thin piece of paper taped onto the violin would work as a temporary solution.

For most people, using tapes is necessary for the first year or two of playing. As you develop your ear skills and muscle memory, you will no longer need these guides. However, it's essential to know where to place your fingers for each note, especially when starting out.
